National Youth Leadership Conference for the Reconstruction of Haiti

With generous support from the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, The MasterCard Foundation, and the Inter-American Development Bank, IDEJEN and YouthBuild International launched the first JENKA National Youth Leadership Conference on the Reconstruction of Haiti on December 13.  The Honorable Minister of Social Affairs, Monsieur Francois R. Lafaille officially opened the conference and addressed the JENKA students.  He encouraged the students to transform themselves so that they could play a leadership role in transforming their communities and their country.  The Honorable Secretary of State for Youth, Madame Carline Montas, and the Honorable Secretary of State for Professional Training, Madame Marina Gourgue, also spoke with the students about the importance of young people playing a leadership role in rebuilding their families, their communities, and their country. 

“Promising Futures” Project is launched in Jordan

With funding from the International Labor Affairs Bureau of the US Department of Labor, Save the Children Federation, Inc., along with its partners , YouthBuild International and The Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development, will implement an innovative 3.5 year, $3.9 million dollar project entitled “Promising Futures: Reducing Child Labor in Jordan through Education and Sustainable Livelihoods”.

Since 2007, YouthBuild International has worked with Catholic Relief Services and a four-country (El Sal­vador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras) network of six NGO implementing partners to adapt the YouthBuild model. In these countries, youth unemployment is 1.6 to 3 times the national average for adults, and nearly half of all youth abandon school before sixth grade.

As young men during the fighting of the 1990s, Edin Mujacic and Jasmin Jasarevic fled their homes in the Brčko District of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Today, as leaders of local Bosnia-Herzegovina NGOs—Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) and PRONI Youth Center—Mujacic and Jasarevic have committed themselves to improving the lives of young people who are unemployed, discouraged, and distrustful of civic leaders.

YouthBuild program planning begins in Iquitos, Peru

YBI has been invited by the Bernard Van Leer Foundation to organize a planning process with partners in Iquitos, Peru to adapt the YouthBuild model for local application. Iquitos is the largest city in the world not accessible by roads,  with the majority of the population living in communities along the river banks of the Amazon, Itaya and Nanay rivers.

YouthBuild International and IDEJEN team up to launch YouthBuild/IDEJEN

In response to the earthquake that devastated many parts of Haiti on January 12, 2010, YouthBuild International has launched YouthBuild/IDEJEN. With core funding support from the MasterCard Foundation, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, the Inter-American Development Bank and Catholic Relief Services, YBI, working with its local Haitian partner IDEJEN, broke ground in November on the first of 12 training centers.

YouthBuild International Remembers Phenyo "Shimi" Maake, a 2010 graduate of Ivory Park YouthBuild in South Africa

Phenyo "Shimi" Maake a 2010 graduate of the Ivory Park YouthBuild in South Africa was an asset in the community of Ivory Park where he served. Through YouthBuild he participated in and contributed to the construction of social houses, community clean up campaigns and refurbishment of a house for the Orphaned and Vulnerable Children. He also participated in assisting the destitute families of Dobsnville in Soweto during the Soweto Flash Floods. He will be missed by his fellow YouthBuild graduates, his family (Mother, Father and Brother) and Friends.
