Applied Basic Education
YBI is partnered with governments, NGOs, and donors to build effective education programs that give young people an opportunity to pursue academic studies and recognized credentials in formal and non-formal education settings. Students acquire basic skills, including literacy and math skills, technical skills related to computers and financial management, and behavioral skills for school, work and community life. YouthBuild works with local partners to ensure that academic skills training aligns with recognized national credentials. YouthBuild programs provide a solid foundation for post-primary and post secondary education opportunities and maximize a young person’s success in the workforce or in self employment settings.

YouthBuild's coupling of classroom study focused on basic education, with hands-on experiential learning enables young people to achieve academic success beyond what may have been expected of them in conventional classrooms. YouthBuild has organized a network of 40 alternative high schools in the US, with assistance from the Gates Foundation, demonstrating YouthBuild's effectiveness as an alternative school model, particularly in preparing marginalized youth for college and sustainable livelihoods. YouthBuild graduates from southern Sudan operate a school in northern Uganda to provide basic education to primary students in refugee camps. YouthBuild’s integrated construction curriculum, Working Hands/Working Minds is moving through adaptation for us in South Africa, Central America, and Timor-Leste.
