YouthBuild programs and projects are adapted to local culture, but all of them adhere to a core set of operating principles:
- Cultivating respectful, caring partnerships between adults and young people;
- Creating learning environments that protect young people from harm and support them to make positive change;
- Helping young people to master new skills and knowledge for success in school and work, responsibility at home, and civic leadership;
- Building tangible community assets in service to others in their communities;
- Offering opportunities for young people to participate in leadership roles in their programs and communities; and
- Offering skills and opportunities for young people to sustain a healthy, safe, livelihood with a path to a productive career.
And a core set of values:
- Profound respect for the intelligence of young people;
- Work for positive change for both young people and their communities;
- Adherence to established YouthBuild principles and standards for program design and performance;
- Commitment to transparency and integrity within our organizations and our network;
- Respect and cooperation across cultures and nations;
- Commitment to using our resources to develop local capacity;
- Alignment with other compatible international efforts to support youth and community development; and
- Advocacy for expanded resources for the protection and development of young people.
