Haiti YouthBuild students affected by Earthquake
The unimaginable catastrophe in Haiti has had a profound impact on the young people in the YBI's construction training program being implemented as part of the national youth program, IDEJEN--an education, training, and livelihood program funded by US Agency for International Development (USAID) and designed and managed by Education Development Center (EDC). IDEJEN operates 100 youth training centers around Haiti, and YBI is partnered with four of them. Several of the centers have collapsed and countless IDEJEN students have lost homes and family members. Additionally, the local IDEJEN staff have lost homes and relatives to the disaster. YBI is working with EDC to develop a response to the earthquake that will focus on supporting the IDEJEN students, staff, and rebuilding the training centers. Clearly, construction will be an important path to both economic security and local empowerment for Haitian youth for many years to come.

In February, the YouthBuild International and Catholic Relief Services partnership in Central America was awarded a two year grant from the International Youth Foundation's entra21 program, focused on employment and training of young people in Latin America. YouthBuild International signs global agreement with streetfootballworld (Sfw)
In March, YBI launched a global strategic partnership with streetfootballworld, that will have the organizations first working together in South Africa, and exploring an expanded partnership in Europe and Latin America. Streetfootballworld (sfw) has built a global network of social organisations working with football as a tool for development.
In 2007, sfw entered a strategic alliance with FIFA and developed a common objective: Football for Hope. The Football for Hope (FFH) Movement is the key element of a strategic alliance, led by FIFA in its capacity as world football's governing body and streetfootballworld is the driving force behind a global network of community development organisations that implement projects worldwide.
The Official Campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa carries the name "Football for Hope--20 Centres for 2010". From 2008 to 2012, twenty Football for Hope Centres (five in South Africa, 15 in other African countries will be built in disadvantaged African communities. YouthBuild will work with sfw to involve local young people from YouthBuild programs in both the planning and on site construction of these centers.
